What Is Tire Height?

Tire height, also known as overall diameter, refers to the distance from the ground to the top of the tire when it’s properly inflated and mounted on a vehicle. It includes the rim size and twice the sidewall height.

How Tire Height Is Calculated

We use this formula:

Tire Height = (2 ร— Sidewall Height) + Rim Diameter

Where:

  • Sidewall Height = (Tire Width ร— Aspect Ratio) รท 25.4
  • Rim Diameter = Usually shown in inches (e.g., 16″, 17″, 18″)

Example:
For a 225/45R17 tire:

  • Width = 225 mm
  • Aspect Ratio = 45%
  • Rim Size = 17 inches
  • Resulting Tire Height โ‰ˆ 25 inches

Why Tire Height Matters

Knowing your tire height helps with:

  • Checking speedometer accuracy
  • Avoiding clearance issues
  • Choosing the right size for tire upgrades
  • Maintaining fuel efficiency and ride quality

  • Fits 16-inch rims

Q. Can I change tire height safely?

Yes, but small differences only. Use a tire height calculator to compare and make sure your new size stays within ยฑ3% of the original to avoid speedometer or clearance problems.
